Risk and Assurance Manager Job Available with Visa Sponsorship
Transport for London (TfL) was established in 2000 as the integrated authority responsible for overseeing London’s transportation system. It operates as a local government body under the Greater London Authority (GLA), with the Mayor of London serving as its chair. TfL’s creation marked the end of the “London Transport” brand, which had been in use for 67 years.
TfL manages a diverse range of services, including the London Underground, buses, trams, the Docklands Light Railway, London Overground and the Elizabeth line.
These services are delivered through a combination of wholly owned subsidiary companies, such as London Underground Limited, private sector franchisees for certain rail services and trams and licensed operators for some bus, taxi and river services. While TfL controls fares across its network, it does not oversee all National Rail services within London.
The organization’s history is rooted in earlier transport authorities. In 1933, the London Passenger Transport Board (LPTB) was formed, bringing various transport modes under a single public entity. Over the decades, governance evolved through entities like the London Transport Executive and London Regional Transport.
The establishment of TfL in 2000 represented a significant shift towards a more unified and locally accountable transport authority for the capital.
